IPG Photonics Launches New Dual-Beam Laser with the Highest Single-Mode Core Power at The Battery Show in Novi, Michigan

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – September 11, 2023 - IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAQ: IPGP), the world leader in fiber laser technology, will highlight new and innovative laser solutions at The Battery Show from September 12-14, 2023 in Novi, Michigan, USA. The IPG booth will include industry-leading fiber laser sources and automated laser systems for EV battery welding applications.

New Laser Technology Raises the Limits of Battery Welding Speeds

Continuing to expand the industry’s widest range of dual-beam fiber lasers, IPG will introduce a new Adjustable Mode Beam (AMB) laser source capable of achieving 3 kW single-mode laser beam in the core.  An industry first, this increase in single-mode power offers unprecedented speed and productivity improvements for battery welding with spatter-free welding speeds up to 2X faster than possible with lower core powers.

AMB dual-beam lasers utilize a secondary ring beam that works in tandem with the single-mode core to stabilize the weld pool, virtually eliminating weld defects like spatter, cracking, and porosity. IPG AMB lasers can be configured with a wide range of beam parameters to offer optimized performance in a variety of welding applications.

Battery manufacturers often prefer single-mode fiber lasers for precision welding applications due to their ability to focus their power into extremely small spot sizes on the part. The resulting high energy density easily overcomes the high reflectivity of metals like copper and aluminum while simultaneously achieving the required weld penetration extremely quickly with a reduce heat-affected zone (HAZ).

Using proprietary laser welding programming, the EV-Cube can be configured to provide welding speeds of up to 10+ cylindrical cells per second while maintaining 25 µm accuracy.
          2. LaserCell™ Battery Welding System: robotic laser system that offers the flexibility and reach needed for large or complex battery modules. Featuring a 6-axis robot, the system can be configured for welding of prismatic, cylindrical, and pouch modules while maintaining high yields and short cycle times.


These systems ship complete with choice of IPG laser, process head, robot and tooling configurations, part handling and loading, integrated software, and IPG programming and process development. These systems can be equipped with real-time laser weld measurement that uses patented IPG technology to directly measure every weld as it is made, ensuring that only parts with welds that meet the required specifications make it into the final product.

Velocity: As cost and technology barriers drop, adoption of ultra-fast fiber lasers is expanding among fabricators

In the 1986 film "Top Gun," Tom Cruise uttered the now iconic phrase, "I feel the need - the need for speed." Fabricators and job shops are also feeling the need for speed when it comes to using ultra-high-power fiber lasers to cut thicker materials faster and better.

Able to cut four times faster than a high-power plasma machine using air-assist gas, UHP lasers are "changing the way steel is cut by replacing nitrogen and oxygen cutting processes with the air-assist process for high-quality and high-speed econimical cutting."

In the last six years, "the highest powers available for cutting applications have increased seven times," says David Fisher, senior director of global marketing for IPG Photonics. The Oxford, Massachusetts manufacturer builds high-performance fiber lasers and provides laser automation solutions that continue to disrupt traditional technologies.

Hand-held Laser Welding's Time Has Come in Metal Fabrication

Laser technology improvements have made laser welding an increasingly popular technique in industries where high weld strength and repeatable weld quality are important. The quality and brilliance of fiber laser light precisely controls material heat input, which allows for welding thin materials. Lasers are not limited just to steels; they also can weld aluminum and copper. Even bimetallic welding is a practical reality.

Fiber technology simplifies beam delivery technology, opening up even more opportunities for process improvements. Modern beam delivery technology such as wobble welding, where the beam oscillates back and forth, allows for the stabilization of the melt pool, enhancing the process window (the ranges of weld parameters) and minimizing poor or variable part fit-up (within limits). In many cases, this eliminates the need for postprocess grinding, reducing labor costs.

Ultra-High-Power Fiber Lasers Change the Competitive Landscape of CuttingWith the introduction of kilowatt-level fiber lasers in the early 2000s and their subsequent integration into cutting tools in the late 2000s, fiber lasers have transformed laser cutting from a niche method to a mainstream fabrication process. Since then, fiber lasers have dominated the laser cutting of sheet metals because of their ease of integration, reliability, low maintenance, and low capital and operating costs versus prior laser technology, high cutting speeds, and the possibility of scaling up their power. The laser cutting market has grown more than 10 percent annually in the past decade, more than double the rate of other profile cutting processes.

Until recently, the generation of super-octave continua in bulk materials at full repetition rates of femtosecond (fs) oscillators has been limited to a few special cases of Kerr lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers. In 2019, we described a 3.4-octave fs source with 50 nJ pulse energy at the repetition rate of 78 MHz based on polycrystalline Cr:ZnS. Here we explain the mechanism of fs
   supercontinuum generation in transition-metal doped polycrystalline II-VI semiconductors at nJ-level pulse energy. We demonstrate
   that this new supercontinuum regime is enabled by a complex, yet well-reproducible, interplay between the effects arising from the
   third-order nonlinearity, the quadratic nonlinearities, and thermal optical effects in the medium. We also demonstrate the control
   of fs pulse propagation via the control of the material microstructure.

The recent introduction of an easily integrated technology, based on a beam wobbling technique, is helping overcome difficulties in welding reflective materials such as copper and aluminum as well as dissimilar materials. This cost effective technique is helping to resolve porosity and hot cracking issues with laser welding, while making part-fit up to 3x more forgiving in terms of seam gap and seam offset. By enabling independent control of penetration depth, spot velocity, weld speed and seam width, welding applications
   can be further improved to help achieve better welds both structurally and visually which eliminates the need for post processing.
