IPG Lasers Offer Unmatched Single-Mode Performance

IPG single-mode fiber lasers are defined by smaller spot sizes, better beam qualities, and higher powers. By achieving the highest power densities available, IPG industrial single-mode fiber lasers achieve faster processing speeds and better results across a wide range of applications.

Higher Beam Quality, Higher Power Density

Power density, defined as the power over the area of a laser beam's spot size on the part, is a critical factor in laser processing. Power density can be increased without increasing laser power by increasing beam quality to concentrate more power in a smaller area.

Single-mode fiber lasers create extremely small spot sizes on the part by highly effectively concentrating laser power. This allows single-mode lasers to process materials faster with reduced heat input and reduced overall power.

multi-mode beam profile

Multi-Mode Fiber Lasers

Multi-mode output beams contain multiple superimposed spatial modes. The resulting spatially averaged beam profiles usually have a bell-shaped or flat top distribution. The focal spot sizes on the material start from ~100 µm in diameter but are typically between 200 µm and >1 mm wide. These larger spot sizes are desirable in many high power applications like cutting and welding of thicker materials.

Single-Mode Beam Profile

Single-Mode Fiber Lasers

There is just one mode in a single-mode laser beam. The output beam has a Gaussian energy distribution with a sharp high peak intensity in the center. Single-mode lasers are focused into smaller spot sizes typically between 30 and 100 µm in diameter. These smaller spot sizes are required for a variety of precision applications in fine metal cutting and drilling, precision welding, non-metal processing, and 3D printing.
