This short technical seminar presented as part of IPG’s educational Lunch and Learn series provides a concise summary of how to add cutting capacity, reduce laser cutting costs or eliminate die costs for prototype stamped parts in the easiest and lowest-cost way.

 

Intended primarily for engineers and managers in the metal fabrication, metal stamping and nameplate industries, this seminar provides a solid technical foundation in the use of fiber lasers for the high-speed precision cutting of small parts and an understanding of the economics of laser processing.

The tightly focused spot size, resulting from high beam quality of the shorter wavelength fiber laser, offers faster processing speeds, with a larger working distance and higher depth of focus. The latter two advantages can ease workpiece tolerances.

Scheduled from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM at local venues, these short seminars allow for learning while you eat. Complimentary lunch and refreshments are provided by IPG.

IPG Laser Cutting Head

IPG has designed the FLC-30 laser processing head specifically for high-speed metal cutting. Taking advantage of the IPG fiber delivery, it has extremely low weight to minimize moving mass when cutting small parts at high speed.

Reflective Material Cutting

Laser cutting of mild steel and stainless steel has a long history and has been one of the primary applications for CO2 lasers. However CO2 lasers have not traditionally offered a good solution for cutting highly reflective materials.

 

 


Fiber lasers have an emission wavelength of around 1 .07 µm, compared to 10.6 µm for traditional CO2 alternatives. Not only is the 1.07 µm laser light reflected less, and therefore absorbed more easily, but the shorter wavelength can be focused into a spot that is around 1/10th of the diameter of a CO2 beam, providing dramatically higher power density, making metal penetration easier.

Fiber Lasers for Cutting

Fiber lasers are displacing traditional CO2 lasers in many cutting applications. The high wall plug efficiency (WPE) of fiber lasers results in considerable energy savings, and the 1 micron wavelength and excellent beam quality enable high resolution cutting spot formation.

 

When paired with an appropriately configured cutting head, single-mode lasers can produce a laser cutting spot size of around 63 microns (0.0025 inch), providing unmatched cutting beam resolution. The small spot size combined with high laser output power produces extremely high energy density, further enabling light-material interaction on even the most reflective materials.

  

IPG’s YLS-Series of lasers is designed for industrial applications. Like all IPG Fiber Lasers they are completely maintenance free. No consumable gasses and no optic alignment. Packaged in NEMA cabinets and having hot swapping module redundancy, the lasers provide unmatched reliability and machine availability.

Vision System for Precise Part Alignment

For applications that involve cutting out parts from pre-patterned, or pre-processed material (for examples screen-printed labels, punched parts, or chemically-etched components), cutting precision is impacted by the performance of the laser system, but is often dominated by dimensional deviations in the previous patterned or processed layers.
The LaserCube Vision Alignment System eliminates this source of error and increases part yield by performing an alignment to the previous pattern prior to cutting.
This fully-automated alignment can be programmed to be performed in a manner appropriate to the job, from a single sheet-level alignment all the way to individual part registration. Being easily programmed for each job type, the Vision Alignment System enables the highest laser cut accuracy for any pre-patterned or pre-processed parts.
